A day at the olympic park

Tuesday brought another early start – although not as early as yesterday’s.  The nice thing about home base for this voyage is that I don’t even have to go through London to get to the Olympic Park… it’s on the same end of London – in Stratford.

I must say at this point that I have been extremely impressed with the entire organization, especially the Games Makers, they have just been outstanding!  I’ve been lucky enough to chat with a number of them on the East Anglia trains and they are just pleased as punch to be doing what they do.

In any case, the first event of the day was diving!  This was the hardest/single most expensive ticket that I had acquired so I planned to fully enjoy it!

I was walking into the pool and suddenly was approached by someone who wanted to know if I would mind being interviewed on the big screen… yeah… I know… this happens a lot!  I think I spoke well and the host seemed to enjoy the banter.

My ticket was about four rows away from the pool – although it was on the opposite side of the pool.  Not a problem!  I had a great view nevertheless!

The event was great.  I thought originally we’d get to see one dive for each person and then be done with it.  Not true!  Each person had six dives.  For me it was a mix of watching the dive live and then turning to the other side of the pool to see the video replay!

As close as I got to Alexandre Despatie!

When the event was done I went celebrity hunting… but to no avail!  Apparently the divers are whisked away through underground tunnels, or a Delorean I suppose.

Due to the fact that I had two events in the Olympic Park on this day, I stayed in the park for the day.  I ended up having some fun adventures!

Just after the diving event I happened to bump into a NBC field crew with a gentleman named Eric Perkins… and all of a sudden I was on the Today Show (NBC's morning show) discussing Canada-US sporting relations!  It was tons of fun and I’m working on getting hold of a clip.

Also ran into more Canadians…

 ... and some Americans...

... including the family of Newmarket’s own Olympian Sheila Reid!  It was wonderful meeting them… small world to meet Newmarket residents on the other side of the world!

After doing some shopping at the London 2012 MEGASTORE and its smaller affiliates, I was jumped by Emily and Chris!  Apparently it’s easy to find me with the costume!

We then went over to Park Live where there were massive screens set up to watch the Olympics.  We watched one of the British cyclists win a gold medal and the cheers were massive!

It was then time to head over to Athletics.  We thought our tickets would be up in the nosebleeds due to a row 50 mark on the ticket… not so!  Right next to the flame!

Seeing the Athletics in the Olympic stadium was so unbelievably cool!  They actually had discus, long jump and high jump going on in different parts of the stadium so it was hard to focus on what I wanted to watch!!!
Some nice surprises that night… first of all I got to see Canada’s Derek Drouin win bronze in the high jump!  That was so exciting to be there watching the medal win!

Probably the funniest thing that happened was when the German athlete Robert Harding won the discus, and then proceeded to turn into a hurdler!

Again… another awesome day! More excitement to come on Wednesday!
Cheers,
Vick.
